Ballsdeep: aaaaaaah, the very first show of the TSAOC tour (and 6 more on the itinerary after this, Neil Young in Concord and PJ in Seattle preceded this). the main memory that sticks out other than Bruce Kaphan's SICK sit-ins (GFAPS has a different flavor, and his pedal steel on "Wiser Time" is ethereal) was the gregarious ticket snafu at the box office thru Taller. a LOT of Crowes fans came from all over for this show (though it was somewhat pre-innerweb and widespread cell phone days), and a lot of those fans bought tix thru Taller. that resulted in a pushed back start time of nearly an hour. this version of the show has never been spread via digital method before; to my knowledge Spider-Web (Scott Weber) passed around a different, mic-stand version of this show. the other 'treat' I discovered was memories told me that I was 15-20 rows back on Marc's side, but the ticket stub right here says "ORCH row:E seat:11", with a small 4 row deep pit in front of the orchestra.
so this was recorded from 9th row, slightly to the left of the soundboard when looking at the stage (in front of Johnny) that said, this recording is very solid for not being done with a mic stand. a little 'boomy', but also way in front of the balcony, where the mic stands were located.
highlights to the ol' earholes are the aforementioned Kaphan (he played pedal steel on WT on "Amorica", for those unawares, GFAPS was extra bonus) sit-ins, a punchy-as-fuck "Hotel Illness" (listen to the swampy rhythms), a drop-your-jaw FTP of "Big Time" (Neil's album came out less than a month previous, I believe), and the tasty jams before both "Bring On, Bring On" and "Black Berry".
whether it's better than the other circulating version(s), I've no idea, but about 2 hours was spent 'evening everything out to -10db' before the final boost. so the music shines thru. as it should be.
BIG thankeroo to Humbug for the uppage!
also included at the very beginning is the pre-show announcement glossing over' the problems at the box office. not sure if that's on other versions out there, but I was lucky enough to have the deck ready to tape when the guy came out onstage. pretty sure I taped BR549 as well, but would have to check
more shows to come,
---ballsdeep signing OUT!
